Brock Lesnar Vs. AJ Styles Could Easily Be More Of A Squash Match Than A Dream Match

Tuesday on SmackDown Live, AJ Styles defeated Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship, thereby earning the right to compete against Brock Lesnar at WWE Survivor Series. The newly announced match is currently receiving grass-roots support as one of the most exciting on-paper matchups of 2017.

Brock Lesnar is set to take on AJ Styles at WWE Survivor Series.
Unfortunately, paper doesn't wrestle.
Recent history suggests that Brock Lesnar is just as liable to dismantle the popular babyface in quick fashion as he is to have a competitive back-and-forth matchup that occupies the dreams of fanatics who take this product too seriously.
Whether the decision to have Lesnar squash Styles is popular or not, it won't affect the stubborn WWE Network subscriber count, which, following WWE's 3Q 2017 earnings call, has been proven to be a cyclical number that only really jumps during WrestleMania season. In fact, squashing Styles could be part of WWE's ongoing plan to build up the WrestleMania 34 main event, which is expected to feature Lesnar. More on that later.

WWE is not opposed to giving Brock Lesnar's opponents some offense, but this usually occurs when one has palpable appeal as a real-life tough guy. Samoa Joe, a submission specialist whose offense and persona mimics that of a cage fighter, was presented as Lesnar's equal during their feud leading up to Great Balls of Fire.
Goldberg, whose career was built on a dominant, unbeaten streak, was booked as a nostalgic world beater who was every bit the monster that Lesnar was. The same can be said about Braun Strowman.
But when it comes to straight-up pro wrestlers? Well, Lesnar tends to have his way with these types.
